Grumpy / sunshine
One of them is difficult and one of them is not, and the difficult one turns out to be difficult with everybody except her.
What it is
Grumpy sunshine pairs a guarded, short-spoken, faintly weary person with someone warm and undefended. The dynamic is a contrast, but the story is about what the contrast reveals.
The trope lives or dies on one line: soft for her only. His gruffness has to be real and consistent — with colleagues, with strangers, with the person asking him a perfectly reasonable question — so that the exception he makes is legible as an exception. If he is pleasant to everyone, there is nothing to notice.
And the sunshine half is not simple. Warmth that costs nothing is wallpaper. The good versions give her something she is carrying, and let her brightness be a choice she keeps making rather than a temperament she was issued.
Why it works
Because being singled out is the most flattering thing that can happen to a person, and this trope is a hundred pages of it. It also lets affection be shown rather than said, which suits a character who does not talk: he remembers her order, he fixes the thing, he is standing where she needs him to be.
How it usually goes
- His manner is established with other people first: a colleague, a stranger, someone asking a fair question.
- She is warm at him anyway, on purpose, and does not flinch when it is not returned.
- He does something practical rather than saying anything — the thing gets fixed, the order is remembered.
- Someone notices he is different with her, out loud, and he denies it badly.
- Her brightness is shown to cost something, and he is the one who sees it.
- He says one plain sentence, and because he is who he is, it is enormous.
The kinds you'll meet
Grumpy and genuinely warm
He is short with everyone and kind underneath it, and the story is about the gap being visible only to her. The most comfortable version, and the one that most depends on his rudeness being real.
Tired rather than cross
Not hostile — depleted. A man who has run out of small talk, meeting someone who does not require any. Quieter, and often the more adult of the two.
Sunshine with weather in it
She is the warm one and she is carrying something, and her brightness is a daily decision rather than a temperament. This is the version that gives the trope two people in it instead of one and a device.
Grumpy on both sides
Neither is sunny, and what one of them brings instead is persistence. Rarer, funnier, and it works when the warmth is a thing she does rather than a thing she is.
Done well, done badly
- His manner is genuinely off-putting to other people, on the page, more than once.
- The softening is behavioural before it is verbal.
- She is warm on purpose, and it occasionally exhausts her.
- He is not rude to her and forgiven for it. Grumpy is not the same as unkind.
- He is unpleasant to her specifically, and the book frames it as chemistry.
- Her sunniness has no interior, so she reads as a device for fixing him.
- He is transformed into a different, chattier man by the end, which loses the appeal entirely.

What makes grumpy sunshine work?
One line, and everything serves it: soft for her only. His gruffness has to be consistent with everybody else so that the exception he makes is legible as an exception. If he is pleasant to the whole cast, there is nothing for the reader to notice.
Does the grumpy one have to change?

No, and the distinction is the whole trope. Grumpy is a manner. Cruelty aimed at her and forgiven because the book needs her to forgive it is a different story, and not a romance.

Yes, and it is an underwritten version worth looking for. The mechanics are identical — her manner is consistent with everyone, and he is the exception — and it sidesteps the tired shape where a woman's warmth exists to repair a man.
