Privacy

No accounts, no trackers, no advertising. What you ask for is kept so the app can give it back to you, and it is tied to this browser rather than to you.

Who we are

Told at Midnight is run by Off Record LLC, 1209 Mountain Road, Ste N, Albuquerque, NM 87110. Anything about this page, or about what we hold, goes to admin@offrecord.space.

While the site is private it sits behind a password and asks search engines to stay away.

There is no account

The first time you arrive, the app puts a random key in a cookie. That key is how it knows which stories are yours, what you have saved and how you have rated things. It identifies a browser, not a person: we never ask for your name or your email, the key is never shown to another reader, and it is never attached to a story you put into the collection.

What is kept in your browser

Four small cookies and one note in the browser's own storage. Nothing else, and nothing belonging to anyone else.

door
That you confirmed you are 18 or over. Until you close the browser, or a year if you ticked "Remember me on this device".
reader
The random key above. A year.
reading
How you like a story set: paper, text size, spacing, width, scrolling or pages. A year. It is a cookie rather than browser storage so that a story arrives already in your settings, with no flash of the default first.
door_note
Only if you type something on the front of the site before coming in: it carries your words through the door. Ten minutes, and deleted the moment they arrive.
where you got to
The paragraph you reached in each of your last sixty stories, kept in the browser's own storage. It never reaches us.

What is kept on our server

All of it against the key in the cookie, never against a name.

the stories you asked for
What you chose, what you typed in the box, and the story that came back, with whether you put it into the collection.
how it went
The verdict you gave a story and the reasons you ticked.
what you saved
Which stories you bookmarked, and when.
your standing note and default picks
What you set on Yours, so that it applies to what you ask for next.
the job
While a story is being written: what was asked for, how far it has got, and what went wrong if it failed.

Where your words go

A story is written by a model running on our own server, so what you type is not handed to another company to be written. [Confirm before this page is public: who hosts that server.]

What you type is checked against our own rules before a story is written, and the story is checked again before it can go into the collection.

Our hosting keeps ordinary web-server logs: which page was asked for, when, and the network address it came from. [Confirm before this page is public: who the host is, and how long they keep logs.]

If you send a story to your Kindle, the file leaves us: Amazon receives it when you upload or email it to them, and what happens to it there is between you and Amazon.

What we do not do

No analytics, no advertising, no trackers, no social buttons, nothing embedded from anywhere else. Even the fonts are served from our own machine, so your browser never asks another company for them. We do not sell or share what we hold, and there is no mailing list.

How long it is kept

What is listed above stays until you ask us to delete it. If that ever changes, this page changes with it.

Asking for a copy, or for deletion

You can delete it yourself, without asking anybody: "Forget this device" at the bottom of Yours clears what we hold against this browser's key and the cookies that carry it. It says exactly what goes before you confirm, and it cannot be undone.

For a copy, or for anything that control does not cover, write to admin@offrecord.space. Because there are no accounts, what we hold is tied to a key in your browser rather than to an email address, so tell us roughly when you last read and what you asked for.

Nobody under 18

This is a site for adults. The door asks, and your answer is the only thing it records.

If this page changes

The date at the top changes with it, and what we hold is only ever what this page says we hold.
